And then the rain came…. we knew it would, didn’t we?! Never mind, we’ve had a pretty sweet two weeks and if you’re getting hitched this weekend, don’t worry, we bet the suns going to be back!
Today we are venturing a little further afield to Muckross House and Gardens in Killarney to share the beautiful engagement session of Aisling and Alan. Their photographer Antonija Nekic got in touch to share some Irish magic with you all. It’s a gorgeous shoot and Aisling’s styling was bang on Carrie Bradshaw-style-pretty! Enjoy…
Our love story
Ours is a simple love story, I guess. It was a quintessentially Irish affair as we met in a bar during our final year in college. Alan still claims to this day that it was ME who chatted him up. I always deny it…but the truth is he’s right! We had mutual friends, so it was easy to spark up a conversation and it just went from there. Looking back, we were totally head over heels from the very beginning but it took him over a month before he finally bit the bullet and asked me out properly. It makes me smile to think back to the innocence of it all!
The engagement was so picture-perfectly romantic! Which for me is so ironic because we are not normally the sweeping gestures kind of couple. But, boy, did he take me by surprise!
Alan and I are both teachers, so we normally spend our summers traveling for a spell, and summer 2015 was no different. We planned to travel through Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia. We arrived to Vienna on a Friday from Prague, and we immediately fell in love with the city. On the second morning we had arranged to go cycling through the Wachau Valley. The valley runs alongside the Danube River and is blanketed by vineyards where cyclists can stop off to sample the wine. We set off early with a view to spending the day enjoying the cycle, the wine and the sun, but about a half hour into our 60 km bike ride disaster struck and the heavens opened. A huge storm started and we had to take refuge in a small cafe on the side of the path. Alan said later that he was so nervous the showers wouldn’t stop and that his plans would be scuppered, whereas all I was worried about was getting soaked, having to turn and not getting to sample the wine! About a half hour later, the shower stopped and the sun came out again and from there, the best day of our lives resumed. We took off again on our sweet little high-nelly hire bikes, cycled at our leisure, enjoyed the sunshine, had the chats and took in the beauty of the Austrian countryside. We also stopped off in local vineyards every couple of km to sample some wine – sure, it had to be done! With about 20km to go, we spotted a little cove right next to us, down by the banks of the Danube and we decided to go for a swim. I got out of the water at one point to get my camera and when I turned around Alan was down on one knee on the rocks on the river bank, taking something from his bag. A little box!!!! It took me a second to register what was going on, and when I did realise, and he finally asked “the question”, I didn’t hesitate in saying yes. We were both over the moon with happiness! I was in shock, but it must have been faith because when we eventually hopped back on our bikes to finish our cycle through the valley – now as future Mr and Mrs – we immediately came upon the most beautiful hill top vineyard with stunning views right across the valley and over the Danube. It was the perfect place to sip on two glasses of bubbly and contemplate the rest of our lives together. I still can’t quite believe that this beautiful story is OURS. It was just the most amazing, amazing – yet simple and personal – day.
Our engagement shoot
We decided to do an engagement shoot because we had heard that it was a good way to warm up for the big day. We also thought that it would be lovely to get a few snaps in some of our favourite spots in Killarney (my hometown) with our doggy Finn by our side. We were immediately glad that we decided to do it as Antonija was incredible. She put us at ease straight away, and we actually loved the day!! We felt so comfortable, and Antonija is just so talented that we knew we would love the photos. We weren’t wrong as we absolutely love the finished product – they are super cute, and really showcase Killarney in all its glory!
Our wedding is on 10th June 2016 – a mere number of days away now! It’s on in Glengarriff Lodge in West Cork. We have hired this beautiful lodge for the week, and we will have an outdoor ceremony in the forest and later a marquee to host our 140 guests. We are thoroughly enjoying the planning process, despite all the work that’s in a marquee wedding! We just cannot wait to finally become husband and wife and party the night away with our nearest and dearest. After the wedding, we are heading off on a little adventure to Indonesia and Malaysia and finishing up in Dubai. To say we are excited about the weeks ahead is an understatement.
Such a gorgeous love story, Aisling and Alan, thank you both for sharing! Wishing you the most amazing wedding day this Friday!!
