Getting Married in Northern Ireland Reader Awards – The Finalists

November 9, 2018

Friday – It’s a whoop from me!

I mentioned at the beginning of Wednesday’s beautiful wedding feature (Shona and Rafa, go check it out!) that this weekend I’ve got a night out – out out. As some of you may know I began my career at Getting Married in Northern Ireland bridal magazine and this Saturday they are hosting their bi-annual Reader Awards ceremony in Corick Country House Hotel and they’ve kindly invited me along.

The event not only involves an evening dress, heels, hair and makeup but the chance to catch up with some of my favourite bridal suppliers and the pleasure of seeing who is crowned champion in each category. Unlike many others the Getting Married Reader Awards are voted on by people just like you, brides and grooms from Northern Ireland who loved the suppliers they chose and feel they deserve their vote. It’s always a fabulous night out and I’m delighted to be going!

There are 17 categories and just to keep you in the loop I’ve shared the top five finalists in each category below – stay tuned to my Instagram stories to see all the action and I’ll be sure to share the winners details next week!

An Elegant & Stylish Summer Wedding at Bellingham Castle: Grainne + Jamie

June 25, 2018

Bellingham Castle, Adam & Grace Photography

Happy Monday. It really is a great Monday, this weather has me in such a fun and sunny mood which isn’t great for the old work productivity FYI, but I’ll take it for now!

I hope you had the chance to bask in the summer sun this past weekend and are ready for a busy week. If you’ve kids you’ll know this is the last week of school before we embark on eight weeks of school holidays (exciting and scary in equal measure) and if you’ve no kids you’ll be pleased to know by Friday the roads will be a lot quieter in the mornings.

Today we have the most beautiful wedding to share from Adam and Grace Photography. Two things that strike me about Grainne and Jamie’s day is Grainne’s smile, she literally smiled and laughed all day long and her wedding dress has pockets – the holy grail in bridal accoutrements! Thanks for sharing your day guys.

Couple: Grainne + Jamie

“We first met through a friend we had in common, I knew I fancied Jamie from the offset so I took a risk and done the cheesy thing and added him on Facebook, he accepted but that was it, I never heard from him. I quickly deleted him after a few days and a couple of weeks later I was surprised to see a friend request from him and we started chatting. We had quickly arranged a date and Jamie took me to his favourite Ice Cream parlour in Hilltown.”

The Proposal

“We got engaged on December, 20th 2014. Jamie had booked one of my favourite restaurants in Carlingford for dinner, we sat down for dinner and my plate arrived with a big blue box on it. Once I opened the box there was a Christmas tree bauble inside with gold ribbon inside with ‘Grainne will you marry me’ on it. We had spoke about marriage etc, but I never ever expected it to happen then.”

Wedding date: Saturday 13th May 2017

Ceremony: St Catherine’s, Dominican Chapel, Newry

Reception:  Bellingham Castle, Castlebellingham

Our Planning

“I started off looking for venues, I knew I wanted something which was exclusive to us for the day. I had been to a few places and couldn’t find anything I truly loved. Jamie organised the viewing for Bellingham Castle and from the moment we drove up the driveway I was in love and we both knew this was exactly what we had imagined for our day. I had been to a few wedding fayres but the one I found the most helpful was the Quirky wedding fayre, with lots of help from my mum we knew exactly what I wanted so we just worked our way through a list and one by one we ticked them off. I never got stressed and I really do believe the key to the build up of any wedding is to stay relaxed! When you go for a classic wedding look and a venue like Bellingham Castle it speaks for itself.”

Our Style

“I wanted the day to be very classic and elegant. My colour scheme actually came about as I had picked my wedding invitations before anything else. I had saw my invites at the Quirky Wedding fayre and I knew I loved the vibrant colours. The stationery was made by Kerry at The White Letter and featured a gorgeous floral arrangement in beautiful colours.”

My Dress

“I got my dress in La Boda Bridal in Banbridge, it was by Pronovias. My Mum was saying to me when we got engaged that she was dreading the dress shopping and I would have her half way around the country, but I done some research and knew I wanted a classic dress. I went with one dress in my head to try it on and it was the one!

My bridesmaids were by Maids to Measure from Petticoat Lane in Hillsborough. I had been bridesmaid at my brothers wedding and I loved everything about Petticoat Lane so I decided to book in for my own, I just wanted the bridesmaids to be comfortable as I find this is key in having a wonderful day.”

“The day was more than I ever could have wished for, Bellingham Castle just make you feel like a complete princess, from the moment your view the premises until we left. I just loved every moment of it. The food, the service – just everything was outstanding!  The highlight of my day was walking down the aisle with Hugh & seeing everyone looking at me and Jamie’s nervous looking face at the top!”

A Deep & Warm Toned Winter Wedding at Orange Tree House: Keelin + Chris Óg

April 14, 2018

Good morning, I hope your weekend was a lovely one!

Keelin is my kind of bride, not only did she include lots of rich and beautiful colours in her winter wedding to Chris Óg (hello shades of deep reds, navy and warm metallics!), but she had three pairs of wedding footwear! Yes, I am a sucker for the wedding shoes – always! – keep an eye out for them, they are pretty special!

Thanks to Keelin and Chris Óg for sharing their day with us, and You Them Us Photography for the stunning images.

Couple: Keelin + Chris Óg McCann

“We met through friends initially but had our first proper meeting on our first date which was in Clements on Botanic in February 2013. We just got on straight away over an americano and a green tea! It was probably after the first few months for us both that we knew this relationship was for ever. I suppose when you are a bit older intentions are a bit different and after a few months we knew the relationship had potential for life, and for marriage!”

The Proposal

“The proposal was in November 2015, we were on a bit of a road trip to visit my brother in California. Our first stop was Las Vegas and we were staying in the Paris Hotel. On the first night of arriving we had booked a meal in the Eiffel Tower Hotel. Chris Óg wanted the proposal done at the start of the holiday so he wasn’t nervous about it the whole time away. We had a table overlooking the Bellagio Hotel with their fountains. Chris Óg proposed after a gorgeous meal. We went on to the piano bar in the Paris Hotel to celebrate and patiently waited for our family to wake to tell them our news. There were a few FaceTime calls from Las Vegas in the early hours!”

Wedding date: Friday 30th December 2016

Ceremony: Our Lady of the Visitation, Comber

Reception: Orange Tree House, Greyabbey

Our Planning

“We gave ourselves a year for planning. We knew we didn’t want a hotel wedding and wanted a more alternative venue. Both our families are big so we knew we would have to make a few sacrifices about the invite list as most alternative venues have smaller capacity. I grew up around Strangford Lough so Orange Tree house felt like the perfect venue. We had to look at numbers so it was the most difficult thing to do. After visiting the venue we booked pretty much straight away.

Everything after that was looking at budget and style of what we wanted.  We both agreed a budget as we didn’t want to get in debt so we had to work out how much we could save each month. We wanted people to enjoy the food and venue so that was the biggest chunk of our budget. The dress was also a big part of the budget.

Our family means so much to us, especially the kids so we themed our tables around them. We have 9 nieces and nephews between us and we had nine guest tables so it worked out perfectly. Each table was named after them and had a photo to show guests were to go.”

Our Style

“We had in our heads something relating to the prohibition / Gatsby era. The theme inspiration came from my dress. My dress had gorgeous vintage scallops and it was gold underlap. My engagement ring and our wedding rings were also gold so we wanted to incorporate that into the wedding. The colours were navy with copper, rose gold and gold with deep reds and burgundy mixed in. I also have an obsession with pineapples and knew I wanted to include them. We ended up spray painting lots of pineapples gold and copper and scattered them throughout the venue. Pineapples are a sign of welcome, warmth, friendship and hospitality. Chris Óg wasn’t so sure about them at the start but thought they brought the theme together really well on the day and he even wore a pineapple lapel pin on his suit!”

My Dress

“I was bridesmaid to my best friend in the May of the same year so we had went around a lot of shops and got to see the current styles of dresses. I originally wanted a Watters dress as I loved the floaty, fairy tale like dresses. We went to see these at Jenny Lindop in Bangor but everyone hated these on me! My mum’s friend used to own a wedding shop so she started picking out dresses for me and found the one I wore. It was a beaded Ronald Joyce dress.”

Our Highlights

The day went really well. It flew in. It was a lot of saying hello and welcoming people and once you had got round everyone it turned into saying goodbye to older guests leaving early.

Chris Óg’s Highlight: When Keelin turned up (she was 45 minutes late because of very bad traffic!)! It got to a point that I thought the wedding may not happen. One of Keelin’s sisters asked if I had ever seen runaway bride – which didn’t go down too well for the nerves!

Keelin’s Highlight: It was the wedding mass. It just felt really intimate and our Priest was so good at making us feel at ease. He went through everything so calmly making sure we took everything in. Our wedding singers, Aura were unbelievable and the wedding music just made it feel really magical and emotional. We had lots of Christmas carols so it was lovely. That was definitely my favourite part.

Our Advice

“Take time for each other on the day. Enjoy the run up and make sure there isn’t too much running about – keep it for the nice things, like getting pampered, and spend time with friends. Also delegate! Nominate someone else to be the contact for the venue on the day – I think if I was to do it again I would consider hiring a wedding planner just for the day.”

Relaxed Countryside Garden Party Wedding: Sarah + Peter

April 3, 2018

What a glorious wedding we have to kick off the new look website with – oh, didn’t you notice? We’ve had a little restyle! I would suggest you go have a look around but not before you read about Sarah and Peters beautiful countryside garden party wedding that was held in her aunts garden and orchard! Thanks to Adam and Grace for their stunning photography.

Couple: Sarah + Peter Wilson

“We met back in 2007 whilst we were both still at school. Although we weren’t at the same school we used to go to the same Spar shop on our lunch break and through meeting there, mutual friends and the power of MSN we became friends. We knew it was for life during our first holiday together. We’d been going out for two years and booked a trip travelling round Australia for seven weeks. Everyone said we were a bit bonkers but it was the best seven weeks. We quickly realised we didn’t want the adventures to ever stop happening.”

The Proposal

“We always used to walk in the Roe Valley Country Park and it was here that Peter asked me to be his official girlfriend on 06.06.09. We were up here walking our dog Puddles on 06.06.16 and after coming back to Peter and Puddles from a bin run with dog poo (glamorous!) I noticed Puddles had a t-shirt on and then Peter got down on one knee.”

Wedding date: Friday 2nd June 2017

Ceremony: Carrick Parish Church, Limavady

Reception: Stretch marquee in family’s garden, Terrydoo Road, Limavady

Our Planning

“I love Pinterest and loved it even more during wedding planning. We found the whole planning thing relatively easy, we both knew what we didn’t want – fussy hotel wedding, overly fancy food and anything over the top. We spent about ten months planning our wedding.

We wanted a laid back day where our family and friends and us could totally relax and have the best day ever. Since I was little, I always had joked if I was ever to get married I’d want to do it in my aunt and uncles garden in a tipi tent so after Peter proposed, my aunty and uncle offered to host our wedding in their garden in stretch tents. I jumped at the chance then convinced Peter that I could make it a reality!

We put a lot of personality into our day, I’m quite creative so loved making and creating things for our day. I made our order of services, tables settings, table decor etc and my aunty done all of the flowers. We booked things quite quickly without too much hassle. Most of the big things like photographer, food, entertainment etc we booked quite well in advance.

We didn’t divide our budget up but we knew our maximum spend. Last year our real goal was to buy a house so a lot of money went into that instead. We were lucky that we weren’t out the huge cost of hiring a venue and found that by booking and sourcing things we were able to really cut down our costs a lot.”

Our Style

“We didn’t really decide on a specific theme, we knew we wanted something laid back with a countryside feel. I love bunting and hessian so kind of set our theme round this. I had the whole family collecting empty jars which I spent lots of weekends decorating for our venue.

I have lots of boy cousins and only two girls so I’d decided to have the two girls as bridesmaid and flower girl. Unfortunately my littlest cousin lives in Australia and they weren’t able to come home so I just had one bridesmaid. It was really easy finding a dress for Molly, although she’s only 13 she’s tall so we didn’t want anything that would be too old. I was browsing on Debenhams one night and noticed a simple gold dress with a drape at the back, I ordered it and when it arrived Molly liked it and so did I so it was as easy as that.

Peter went to Tomorrow’s in Londonderry to pick his suits, one of our groomsmen were in Australia and one was in London so they couldn’t all be there for sizing or picking. Peter opted for navy and grey and contrasted his waistcoat colour with the groomsmen.

Our little page boy Jacob wore an outfit from Next and Converse shoes. During the reception he got hold of the microphone and sang Wheels on the Bus to the whole marquee!”

My Dress

“I went to Ultimate Dresses, Dungiven, Co. Londonderry who were great, really relaxed environment and not pushy at all.

I originally went to try on a plain, straight Justin Alexander dress but when I tried this style on I quickly realised they didn’t suit me. My mum then pulled out a beaded Jasmine Couture dress which was similar to ones I’d seen by Anna Campbell on Pinterest so tried it on. I literally fell in love the minute I tried it on, it’s definitely true that you’ll know when you try on the right one!”

Our Highlights

“We honestly had the best day of our lives. Friends and family still talk about how good a day they had and we loved every minute of it. We did have a funny moment in the morning when the camper van got lost going to collect the boys for the church. Peters parents had to climb into their own car and drive round and round until they found the camper van with the ribbons on it and lead it to the right house. Peter and I also got forgotten about at the church. After getting some photos taken we discovered our groomsmen had got our driver to take them down to the local pub for a few before the reception so we were left in the rain for a while before people realised we were missing from the reception!

Our highlight of the day were the speeches and being surrounded by our family and friends, seeing them all happy and enjoying themselves in the marquee.”

Our Advice

“The advice we’d give to other couples would be to totally do your own thing. Decide exactly what you want and don’t be bogged down by other people. When we shared our ideas with people we got a lot of funny looks and remarks of ‘that’s a bit different’ but you do need to do what makes you happy. Also enjoy the lead up to the day, the week before our wedding was mad busy as we were decorating the stretch tents and setting up tables/chairs etc but between all my family we threw ourselves in and the week was the best craic. I was a lot more relaxed than I thought I would be, so much so I was getting pushed round the house in a wheelbarrow the day before the wedding. It meant neither of us were nervous or anxious the day of the wedding, we really enjoyed it from start to finish.”
