Love on a Mountaintop: Kate + Richard’s E Shoot

October 12, 2017
Mourne Mountains engagement shoot, Luke Flint Media | The Promise NI

Good morning lovelies! How’ve you all been?

I can tell you life with a newborn (plus 3 kids of school age!) is majorly busy, hence the silence here. Last week, whilst I was feeling in a state of combined sorrow and stress I said to David “I am sick of just chasing my tail every hour of the day.” Being the man I married he put it simply, “That is life. You are alive and living, not just filling the days. You might feel like you’re always reaching for the unreachable but that is life – exciting, amazing life.” He is right of course, I am so happy to be alive and living this frantic and sometimes chaotic life, especially with the special people I get to share it with. So there you go, a little slice of my mind right now for you all!

Anyway, today I have the most amazing engagement shoot in the Mourne Mountains. Leaving the glorious North Coast out of the equation for a minute, the Mountains of Mourne are one of my favourite places in Northern Ireland – not convinced, have a look at these images from Luke Flint Media…

Couple: Kate + Richard

“We met though mutual friends and just clicked the first time we met. Then I took the plunge and asked Richard out first! A few coffee dates and a Patrick Wolf concert later and things were still going really well. It took us a while to have “the chat”, but we got there in the end.”

The Proposal

“We had talked about getting engaged a few times, but Richard really wanted it to be a surprise when it happened. He organised a surprise weekend away in Paris and I thought that was it! But day two- still no proposal. It turns out we’d walked the length of Paris while he tried to find the perfect location to pop the question. In the end it was on the Champ de Mars on our last evening- a big cliché, but still perfect. We didn’t tell anyone for a day or two, not even family, so it was just for the two of us.”

Our Engagement Shoot

“We thought an engagement shoot was really important for us. It meant that we could get used to being in front of the camera, and also that we felt comfortable with our photographer. It was lovely to have photos of just the two of us. Sometimes coming up to the wedding its difficult to get time to spend together, so it’s a good excuse to take a break from planning and spend a fun afternoon together.

Luke was great on our photoshoot. He had an idea for an outdoorsy, mountainous shoot which we were definitely up for. It took a bit of climbing and the wind was out in force, but that made it all so easy to relax into the afternoon. We both felt really comfortable while he took took photos, and was open to any ideas that we had for shots. The photos themselves are amazing- the setting looks unbelievable.”

Our Wedding

“We’re both really enjoying the planning process for the wedding, it’s giving us a chance to really express our individual creativity. We’re planning on making a lot of aspects of the day, from centre pieces to seating charts and little favours for our guests. I think it will give the day a really personal touch and it’s great fun so far! It’s so easy to get carried away with wedding planning, but the most important thing to remember is that it’s about the two of you. It’s exciting to have a day surrounded by people who mean so much to us and who are all excited to see this next part of our lives begin.”

The Story of Us: Bronagh + Gary

August 7, 2017
James McGrillis Photography, Greenvale Hotel | The Promise NI

Good morning and a very happy Monday to you all! Did you have a nice weekend? This wet weather is certainly not playing ball with my summer dreams.

So, I am teetering on the edge of being 40 weeks pregnant and things are about to go in to crazy mode around The Promise HQ. For months now I’ve been saying to my well meaning mates that I will be grand to continue working once the baby arrives and finally I’m eating my words and listening to them as I’ve decided I really do need to take a little while off from it all. Today marks my official start to maternity leave (FYI maternity leave when self-employed is really a self imposed ban on working before I loose my mind, haha!), but I couldn’t let this little blog grind to a halt (for a little while) before I shared Bronagh and Gary’s beautiful early summer wedding. Bronagh is the sister of tailor/magician Dee Graham who we are big fans off so I was delighted when she got in touch after her Big Day.

I’ll stop rambling now and let you read all about their wedding but just a quick note to say a huge thank you to everyone for their kind wishes. Knowing me I will be working away behind the scenes when life lets me and I already have a new notebook crammed with ideas for how this local blog is going to become bigger and better! I’ll be raring to chat so any queries drop me a line at emma(at)thepromiseni.com, and come follow me on Instagram for a few peeks behind the scenes – aka baby spam!

Proposal: Gary surprised me with the gift of a trip to New York in 2014, it was a total shock and completely unexpected, I never imagined he was planning to propose! We were in the tower of Belvedere Castle in Central Park when Gary dropped to one knee and propose!

Wedding date: Friday 2nd June 2017

Ceremony: St Patrick’s Church, Ballinderry

Reception: Greenvale Hotel, Cookstown

Our Planning: Gary and I both knew we wanted to stay close to home so we explored a few different venues but the Greenvale ticked all our boxes and Mickey was an absolute gentleman, we knew it was right for us so we set our date, we chose 2nd June 2017 as on that day we will be celebrating being a couple for 10 years. After confirming the chapel everything fell into place for us as we had a few years before the wedding. We booked everything in advance and avoided any disappointment.

Our theme, in a nutshell, was the story of us. Our invitations included characters of ourselves and featured a timeline telling our journey; marking all our significant milestones so far. Our cake followed the same theme, each tier painting a story of our love together. We chose to incorporate some New York elements into the mix as that’s where we got engaged and also where we had booked for our honeymoon. We tied this in with American candy and also on our table plan where each table was a famous landmark from the city. It made it feel personal to us and sentimental too as NY really is the city of dreams and we wanted to bring a small taste of it to Cookstown!

Photography was one of the most important aspects to us to get organised, I love photos and I am big into sentiment so I was determined I wanted it captured perfectly, focusing on the right vibe and letting us just be ourselves and be natural and happy. Everything we wanted came packed neatly with a wee bow in the form of James McGrillis, an outstanding photographer who has such a keen eye for detail and captures very small, subtle and sentimental moments. Music was another important thing we wanted to secure early - I had my heart set on Donna Taggart and with luck on my side was able to get her booked, two years before our wedding!

We decided instead of buying favours we would donate the money to the Downs Syndrome Association, a cause extremely close to my heart as my older brother has Downs Syndrome and he means the world to our family, I chose giving the money to a worthwhile cause because more times than enough the favours are left lying behind.

Our Style: My wedding dress shopping experience went rather smoothly I am thankful to say! I blocked out two weekends and had organised two appointments per weekend. I didn't want to go too many places as it just gets too confusing! I literally loved everything I tried on and played about with different styles. My last appointment was Perfect Day Lurgan and I tried on one dress in the shop and I hadn't even got it pulled up as far as my knees and I knew it was the one! Our flower girl dresses actually came out of Asda - little did I know when I worked there when I was 16 that I would meet my future husband there and be back one day buying flower girl dresses for our wedding! The maid of honours dress was designed and made by dressmaker Ellen Lambert in Coalisland.

I was very lucky to have my incredibly talented brother, Dee Graham design our suits right down to the very button design! We knew we wanted to go grey and lightweight to match the pastel of the maid of honour and the flowers, the boys said the suits were very comfy. Dee listened and knew what we were aiming for and he delivered above and beyond, we were so pleased with how he kitted out the groom, best man and ushers, one who is only 9 years old! We had four young page boys who got the Dee Graham TailorMade treatment as well!

Our highlights:

Bronagh: We can honestly say our day went even better than what we could have wished for. The weather was absolutely glorious, mother nature was so kind to us! Everything felt like it was on fast forward, hours felt like minutes, it really does fly in so fast! Its so surreal, sitting at the top table and seeing everyone you love in one room smiling and supporting you, it’s an amazing feeling.

For me the highlight of the day was Gary’s speech. He can be quite shy and nervous but standing beside me on the day I had this smiley and confident man who gave the most genuine and heartfelt speech, he totally blew me away and I couldn’t have been more proud of him for the beautiful words he said.

Gary: Two of my favourite things was watching Bronagh walk up the aisle and secondly the smile on Bronagh’s brother Brendan’s face, when I asked everyone to raise their glass to toast him during my speech, the happiness on his face was priceless.

Our Advice: I’m sure this has been said a million times but you really do need to remember that it’s your day and you only get one chance to do it the way you want to. Don’t get too tangled up on the views of others as no matter what you do you will never be able to please everyone so don’t feel guilty or selfish just go for it and have fun and have faith that it will all fall into place. One last thing, remember to take a breather a couple of times, you will most certainly need it! And take a wee minute to sit back and soak it up, it’s so surreal you need to live in the moment and take it all in! PS brides I advise getting them wee heel stoppers for your shoes that lets you walk on grass - godsend!

Blogging Bride: Judith + Josh’s Engagement Shoot & A Catch-Up

July 27, 2017
Blogging Bride, Judith Engagement Shoot, Peter Carvill, Castle Leslie Estate | The Promise NI

Morning! I am so excited to have our 2017 Blogging Bride, Judith back on the blog today. With seven weeks until her Big Day things are getting serious! Today she’s given us a quick catch up on her planning and shared her incredible engagement shoot with Peter Carvill. If you missed her introductory post, head this way. Have a fab Thursday, lovelies!

Blogging Bride, Judith Engagement Shoot, Peter Carvill, Castle Leslie Estate | The Promise NI

For those of you who read my first blog post, you will likely notice that it has been a while (quite a while at that). I’ve tried to tell myself that every bride has a phase in wedding planning in which you can’t actually do too much. In honesty it is true, but I think I lengthened this as long as possible to the point that I actually started to just claim I was laid back (well, the grey area between being laid back and being slightly lazy). But in reality, travelling to London to for work weekly and managing a self-build (when you know nothing about building), wedding plans naturally got knocked back a few notches on the priority list.

Blogging Bride, Judith Engagement Shoot, Peter Carvill, Castle Leslie Estate | The Promise NI

So now, here I am 7 weeks out from the wedding and I am so grateful for my previously freshly engaged, eager and OCD organised self who neatly planned her Pinterest boards, created excel sheets for just about everything. Literally everything from the offset – for guests details, budget (a column for budgeted, that soon required an actual and a difference column to be added), vendor contracts, deposits and essentially anything that you could possibly put into excel. At the time, as a newly engaged bride it seemed ridiculous planning all the finer details because there were a lot more important parts that needed to be sorted first, and a good dose of indecisiveness that would surely mean they would be irrelevant a year and a half later, but no, I seemed to have stuck to the exact themes, designs and ideas I initially planned, which is now coming in ridiculously handy when there is less time to think about the finer details.

Blogging Bride, Judith Engagement Shoot, Peter Carvill, Castle Leslie Estate | The Promise NI

During this time we met with our wedding photographer, Peter Carvill at our venue, Castle Leslie Estate to get some pre-wedding photos. We caught the last of the beautiful autumn colours and the photos turned out amazing. It took some convincing to get Josh on board, but we were both so glad we got these done. For anyone hesitating – amidst following hundreds of wedding blogs on Instagram and pinning like your life depended on it, take some time out and arrange an engagement session. There are so many good reasons to do so…

  • A special time – your engagement marks the start of a special journey, and while wedding planning can be overwhelming at times, it is important to enjoy it and appreciate this part of your life together. Your photos can be the perfect keepsake to remember what can be an excitingly busy time.
  • Capture memories at a special place – you can choose locations a lot mere flexibly that on your wedding day, so why not pick somewhere that reflects you, or a place that is special. We had ours taken around the grounds of our wedding venue, but we managed to convince Peter to bring his camera out onto the lake and got the most amazing photographs in our rowing boats (definitely an area of the estate we wouldn’t manage to squeeze in on our wedding day).
  • Getting to know your photographer and the camera – you likely haven’t had professional photos taken since an embarrassing family photoshoot or school portraits 10 years ago which you can even bring yourself to look at because of you dodgy haircut. Getting some camera time with your photographer will help you relax, which can inevitably prevent stiff and uncomfortable looking photos on your wedding day.

In other wedding news, I have just about recovered from an amazing surprise of a Hen Party where my glamourous assistants thought of every little detail – can’t wait to share this with you guys on the next post.

Bermuda Beach Themed Wedding at Harvey’s Point: Holly + Niall

July 24, 2017
Beach theme wedding, Harvey's Point Donegal, Bradley Henderson | The Promise NI

Good morning gorgeous ones, how was your weekend?

Today’s beautiful Donegal wedding comes thanks to Bradley Henderson Photography via Bermuda and The Wirral, it’s a real international one this week! I love Holly’s choice of soft pink styling, pretty bouquets and how they’ve incorporated tropical touches elegantly into their day.

Couple: Holly + Niall

“We met on the first day of Vet school. Niall strolled into the lecture theatre wearing a Tyrone jersey and I was hooked from day one. It was the beginning of a friendship which blossomed rather slowly (much to our friends frustration), we didn’t get together until five years later. We knew it was for life when as luck would have it, we began working in the same veterinary practice after qualifying from vet school. We have been inseparable ever since.”

Proposal: I grew up in Bermuda so we went on holiday to show Niall the sights. We spent a night in one of the islands five star hotels as it was located on one of my favourite beeches. With ring in hand, Niall had big plans to propose to me under the stars along the beach after a romantic dinner at the Reefs, could Niall encourage me to go for a stroll along the beach? 'No!’
So rather than stumbling onto the perfect location, Niall had to drag me to the beach and accept the compromise of a short walk and sitting on a sun lounger. Eventually when I realised what was happening, the ‘No’s’ from before eventually became a YES!

Wedding date: Monday 22nd August 2016

Ceremony: St Patrick’s Church, Donegal Town

Reception: Harvey’s Point, Lough Eske, Donegal

Our Planning: We started planning the wedding a year in advance. Once we had the venue booked, everything just followed on. Luckily I was on maternity leave during the planning stage so it wasn’t too stressful. We tried to stick to a budget of £15,000 and just about managed! We decided to spend on photography and videography as this would be the main memory we had of the big day. We also didn’t want to budget on flowers so we did lots of research on the type to go for. We wanted to splash out on a venue with great food and surroundings as this is what we thought people would remember, and managed to save on the bridesmaid dresses by getting them online. This was a bit of a risk because it was an overseas company. Luckily they were perfect and they only needed a few adjustments. We also saved on the venue by having the wedding on a Monday. We figured the English side would be making a holiday out of it so it wouldn’t matter too much on the day of the week. We wanted to bring a Bermuda beach theme to the wedding because I grew up there and this is where we got engaged. We went for a pearl pink colour scheme to match the pink sand. We also had Bermuda’s potent rum as favours, which went down a treat. However, there were a few bad heads the next day.

Our Style: I purchased my dress from Bellissima Brides on The Wirral. I wanted something simple and comfortable to dance in with just the right amount of lace but not covering the whole dress. I also wanted something unique about the dress, which is why I chose one with a heart shaped back. They had a lovely range of Mori Lee dresses and I picked the dress as soon as I tried it on. I did some Pinterest research beforehand to get an idea.

For the bridesmaids I ordered online from a website called DIYdresses.com. We took a bit of a risk not being able to see the real thing before ordering them but they were perfect and a quarter of the price of most bridesmaids dresses we looked at.

We did some Pinterest research on the type of suits we wanted, however Niall had the idea in mind long before the wedding. The suits were purchased from S.D. Kells in Omagh.

Our Advice: The day goes by very quickly, so take time to appreciate your wedding day. Failing that invest in a good photographer and videographer to capture some of the things you inevitably miss.

Enjoy every stage of planning for the wedding as the big day because the day flies by.

Take some time out during the day to have a glass of champagne with your new husband/wife.

Sunset Engagement Shoot by Gemma G Photography: Gillian + Dean

July 17, 2017
Sunset engagement shoot, Castle Archdale, Northern Ireland, Gemma G Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning!

I hope this lovely Monday has you in a positive mood – did you get to take advantage of our holiday week? I started last week basking in luxury at Farnham Estate & Spa (more on that visit soon but spoiler alert, I loved every second!) and ended the week up to my eyes in campfires, s’mores and glamping in the Mourne mountains – also excellent even if my 36 week bump stopped me from doing much hiking! That brings us back to today and a new week of wedding inspiration here at The Promise. So far 2017 wedding season is looking amazing and I can’t wait to share these beautiful local celebrations later in the year but first up we have a gorgeous sunset engagement shoot of Gillian and Dean at Castle Archdale, County Fermanagh with photography by Gemma G Photography.

The Proposal:

We travelled America for three weeks – started in Seattle, followed by San Francisco and eventually finishing off in Las Vegas. I carried the ring in my backpack until the last couple of days of the holiday. Gillian even carried it unknowingly. I know Gillian wouldn’t have wanted a big fuss so I proposed in the room in MGM Grand, Las Vegas. I waited until the end of the holiday because I know Gillian would have wanted to get back to see her family and friends after the proposal.

Our Engagement Shoot:

We decided to have an engagement shoot because it would be a good chance to get to know our photographer and be able to work with her before the wedding. We both obviously wanted a good evening with a nice sunset and we both love water in photos. Castle Archdale seemed like the perfect place. Gemma is an amazing person and photographer. I can sometimes be very awkward when there is a camera around but Gemma made us both feel at ease at our shoot. She is so relaxed and takes great pictures without making you feel posed. We would highly recommend her to anyone who is planning a wedding.

Our Wedding:

We are getting married on 26th August this year at the Silverbirch Hotel in Omagh. We are trying really hard to get everything sorted at this stage with six weeks to go so there is no big rush coming into the last weeks so we can relax and have a good time with family and friends.

Classic & Romantic Spring Wedding at Crom Castle by Ursula McCollam Photography: Ruth + Gary

July 4, 2017
Crom Castle Wedding Ursula McCollam Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning!

We’re into day two of the school summer holidays here at Promise HQ and oh joy, rain – absolutely typical isn’t it? This year July means so much more to me, it shall be known as the month before baby arrives, so I intend on enjoying it with the three crazies already here and not stressing over work.

Todays beautiful bride, Ruth, a school teacher from Ballinamallard, contacted me a little while ago about her marriage to Gary and when she mentioned Crom Castle, I had to see more! If you are looking for an utterly gorgeous, romantic and stately venue, this place could be just for you.

How ever you’re spending your Tuesday, have a great one and enjoy Ruth and Gary’s wedding day.

Couple: Ruth + Gary Strain

Ruth and Gary first met in Starbucks in Belfast, not the most romantic of locations but after their third date they both knew they were on to a winner! “Gary asked me the length of time it was normal for somebody to date ‘a religious woman’ before asking them to marry them – I replied between 12 months to a year and a half, and it was decided there and then that he would propose after one year of dating.”

The Proposal: True to his word, Gary proposed on our one year anniversary on a night when I was probably in one of the worst moods and with the biggest pile of marking!! Needless to say I had semi forgotten his promise and was taken rather unaware! After persuading me to leave my pile of marking, we revisited everywhere we had been on our first date (in the chucking rain!) and he proposed right outside my car where he had first left me back on our very first date.

Wedding date: Wednesday 12th April 2017

Ceremony: Magheracross Church of Ireland, Ballinamallard

Reception: The West Wing, Crom Castle, Newtownbutler

Our Planning: I was fortunate to have a number of very good friends who had got married in the last couple of years and they gave us excellent advice. I trawled Pinterest as most brides do for further inspiration and we searched for all our main suppliers online. From the outset neither of us wanted a hotel wedding, and after visiting Crom we instantly fell in love with the venue. It was intimate enough for our small numbers and the setting and interior was exactly what we were looking for. We didn’t set a budget but I am a bit of a bargain hunter - at least that’s what Gary would say!

We focused a good portion of our money on the catering. Gary is a real foodie and my dad always says that  the meal is one of the things people remember most from a wedding. Norman and the team from Saddlers were first class - it was so lovely being able to choose exactly what we wanted to eat and being so involved in that process. The band was also a big priority for us - I have known some of the members of Midnight Graffiti from primary school and love all the music they play. The band was actually the first thing we booked!

Our Style: We went for a grey/green colour scheme and tried to match details around these two colours. Grey is my favourite so I knew from the get go that this was the colour I wanted my two bridesmaids to wear. I wanted the dresses to be fairly informal so that they could be worn again. I found the dress on ASOS and thankfully the girls loved them when they tried them on. As a shoe fanatic, the most important thing was that they were knee length so I could put them in some beautiful shoes!

Wedding dress shopping was actually one of my least favourite parts of planning the wedding! I did not enjoy trying on dresses in shops and felt like every style looked horrible on me! I had seen a dress in a picture online fairly soon after I got engaged, but decided I could never pull it off and as it was from a previous season, I couldn’t find it stocked in any bridal stores. After trying on around 20 dresses, I decided that until I tried that one on, I couldn’t progress with the search. I managed to find it in a bridal store in Mullingar and after emailing the store that morning, I was driving to try it on by the afternoon and Mum and I had it home with us that evening! As the saying goes, when you know, you know!

Gary had his suit made by North in Belfast as he wanted to have something completely unique for this once in a life time occasion. He picked a charcoal grey colour and we put the rest of the men in a deep navy with grey ties to match the bridesmaids.

Our Advice: Be prepared to be very busy in the final 2/3 days - I have never felt stress like it and that’s coming from a teacher! Always accept help from friends/family when the offer and don’t try to do it all yourself, and use good suppliers!

A Summer Garden Party at Rowallane Gardens by Simple Tapestry: Katherine + Niall

June 23, 2017
Summer Garden Party at Rowallane Gardens by Simple Tapestry | The Promise NI

Good morning and a very happy Friday to you all!

Today we’re heading to the beautiful Rowallane Gardens in Saintfield for Katherine and Niall’s summer garden party wedding. Their day was filled with personal touches and even flowers from their own garden, as well as 100 metres of borrowed bunting! The wedding features lots of our favourite local suppliers including Victoriana Floral and of course the gorgeous images from Simple Tapestry.

Couple: Katherine + Niall Gallagher

Niall first saw a picture of Katherine on a friends Facebook page, and they soon met properly on a group skiing holiday in 2011.

Proposal: We got engaged in June 2015. Niall and I have a mutual love of hill walking. We were walking in the Mournes, climbing Slieve Binnian, and when we reached the summit, Niall produced champagne and strawberries from his backpack and promptly proposed. Of course I said yes! Niall presented me with my ring earlier than expected, whilst we were out for dinner in Coppi Restaurant one week later.

Wedding date: Friday 1st July 2016

Venue: Rowallane Gardens, Saintfield

Our Planning: Our venue was never going to be a generic hotel wedding. As a member of the National Trust, I have grown up visiting Rowallane Gardens since I was a little girl, and noticed they do a few small alternative weddings every year. It seemed the perfect place. We contacted their wedding coordinators, who advised us on suppliers they had worked with before. I also did a lot of research on the internet on garden weddings to begin to get ideas. I wanted to do a fair bit of the design and dressing of the venue myself. To keep in line with the surroundings we went with a rustic garden theme. I wanted my bouquet to be dusky pinks and purples and the marquee was dressed by myself and family, using flowers from our own gardens, and I borrowed 100 metres of bunting from my bridesmaid! I choose hessian table runners as they provided a neutral base, and my dad made the wooden table centres and table numbers. I also dressed the tables with jam jars I had been saving for months, with hessian and lace wrapped around them, again to tie in with my wedding dress. I saved dozens of lanterns and placed them around the courtyard for candle light in the evening.

Our Style: I saw dresses by Madeline Gardner online and loved their style, so went to Perfect Day in Lurgan with a print out of a dress. The one I saw online was the one I choose for the day – Mori Lee by Madeline Gardner 2707. It was a fit and flare gown in Café/Silver with Chantilly lace and crystal beading. I bought the dress on my first trip to Perfect Day, and the colour I choose was not even in store, I had to wait nine months to see it for the first time!

I wanted my bridesmaids to feel comfortable on the day, and also have a dress that wasn’t too “bridesmaidy” so they could wear it again. I choose from the high street, Biba at House of Frazer, maxi dresses in Rose. I choose an ivory and rose floral A line dress for my flower girl Lottie from Zulily, which had rose petals within a double layer. She thought she was great, fluffing her dress about all day!

Niall did not want to have the generic “blue suit and brown shoes” combination, he wanted a classic, well-tailored suit. We looked in a few high street shops, but decided to go to Bogart’s in Belfast on a friend’s recommendation. Niall choose a charcoal grey three piece suit. Funnily enough, Niall had chosen his shoes well before, they are from Ted Baker. Coincidentally the soles of the shoes, laces, and lining of the suit all matched the colour of the bridesmaid dresses.

Our Highlights: The day went all too quickly, it was fabulous, and we wanted to do it all again, just in slow motion this time!

Of course the weather wasn’t on our side on the day! Our outdoor ceremony quickly turned into an indoor gathering, but not before all our guests got drenched by a very large rain shower! But despite this, all our guests commented on the intimate setting of our vows, so it was a blessing in disguise. Our highlight was exchanging our vows in front of all our friend and family who were gathered around us.

Our Advice: Do whatever you want, it is your day. Relax and enjoy as it goes all too quickly. We took a few moments away from everyone to just stop and remember together, just us. You will be wanted by everyone all day and night, so just take some time for both of you.
