Relaxed & Heartfelt Wedding Celebration at Riverdale Barn: Heather + Gary

June 14, 2017
Riverdale Barn Wedding, Kirsty-Lyn Jameson Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning and happy hump day!

Before I start to gush about Heather and Gary’s incredible wedding (because it deserves lots of gushing!) I wanted to say a huge thank you to every one of you lovely and very supportive readers who read my last post, commented and sent me a message. You are such a genuinely delightful bunch and I am very grateful for all of your thoughts – I have also began a list of potential babysitters, like I said, you’re all very generous and giving, haha!

Back to today and I am so happy to share Heather and Gary’s wedding, it is so warm and heartfelt and will make you smile no matter your mood! Bursting with style and elegance, every detail from the floral bouquets and table decor, to the bridesmaids sparkly dresses and Heather’s Badgley Mischka dress is gorgeous, and of course not forgetting the beautiful images captured so perfectly by Kirsty-Lyn Jameson.

Couple: Heather + Gary Haire

“Gary and I first dated when we were 17/18 for a few years. Things didn’t work out then and we parted ways.   On a night out in 2011 we happened to bump into each other and things went from there. We knew almost straight away that it was serious and that we were back together for good this time!”

Proposal: Gary and I were on a night away in the Galgorm on Monday 21st July 2014. We were just back up into our room after a day of pampering in the spa and just before we went down for dinner, I turned round and Gary was down on one knee.

Wedding date: Friday 26th August 2016

Venue: Riverdale Barn, Aghagallon

Our Planning: The day came together with a lot of help from my sister Gillian who is wedding obsessed! Gary and I had all these ideas of what we wanted for the wedding but no idea where to start so Gillian was able to put these ideas into action. The venue was probably our biggest expense but once we viewed Riverdale Barn we knew we wouldn’t be happy with anywhere else. We didn’t set a budget although we knew what was too expensive. As we both work full time we were able to save quite a bit of money from when we got engaged up until the wedding. Both our parents were extremely generous which helped out a lot and meant there wasn’t anything we had to do without.

We didn’t really have a theme; I kept going along with the idea of the inside of the barn looking like the outside – green everywhere along with candles. We also had grey tablecloths, I loved the colours of the flowers and greenery against the grey.

Our Style: I purchased my dress from Petticoat Lane in Hillsborough. I originally had my eye on a dress by Enzoani but when I tried it on my family weren’t fussed on it for me as it’s not my usual style. I then tried on my dress and just fell in love with it, it’s called the Crawford dress by Badgley Mischka. I also purchased my shoes from the same designer.

I always had in my head that I didn’t want the usual bridesmaid dresses so I opted for sequins! And I’m so glad I did as the girls looked amazing. Their dresses were by Sorella Vita and we purchased those from Forever Bridal in Belfast. For the guys Gary and I decided we wanted a nice stylish black fitted suit. Gary actually had his made to measure and all the suits were from Groom in Banbridge and they couldn’t have been more helpful.

Our Highlights: The day was perfect, we wouldn’t change a thing, although my nephew fell into the pond at Riverdale, apart from having to make a dash home to get changed he was fine and we can laugh about it now! Everyone commented how relaxed and informal the day was. Seeing our daughter Lexi (who has spina bifida) walk down the aisle was the biggest highlight - there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

Our Advice: If you have the money to employ a wedding planner, do it! Just hand over your ideas and all the work - I’m not an organiser so I didn’t enjoy all the planning, although my sister really did!

Try not to leave anything out as you don’t want to look back and regret a single thing.  If there’s something you have your heart set on it book it as soon as possible.

Pub-Vibe Tipi Wedding at Hilden Brewery by Marc Lawson: Jolene + Alain

May 24, 2017
Hilden Brewery Wedding with Tipis, Marc Lawson Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning!

I hope your week is going well so far, Wednesday already and today we’ve bags of alternative wedding inspiration to share – and tipis I can’t tell you how excited I am to have a tipi wedding on the blog finally! Jolene and Alain are my kind of couple; tea drinkers, lovers of a good pint and always up for craic! Thanks to Marc Lawson Photography in Belfast for sharing their Big Day at Hilden Brewery.

“We met in McHugh’s Belfast, it wasn’t quite the dance moves that attracted me initially. I knew he was a keeper when he first made me a cup of tea – that is something very hard to get right and if you can find someone who can actually do it to your standard then my advice to anyone is to hold on tight and never let them go!”

Proposal: I’d love to say it was on a sunny beach in the Maldives but it wasn’t, it was a cold, windy February night on Ballyholme beach, Bangor. You could say… windswept of my feet!

Wedding date: Thursday 13th August 2015

Ceremony: St. Mary’s Craigavole, Swatragh

Reception: Hilden Brewery, Lisburn

Our Planning: We both wanted a very relaxed vibe to the wedding so we knew straight away we wanted Hilden Brewery. We had been up at the festival a few months before and knew it would be perfect fit, something a bit different. It was never going to be the big white wedding, more pub-like, with a lovely outdoor setting including tipi tents. Beer on tap on arrival, a lovely meal and a barbecue in the evening was just what we wanted. Once we had the venue and the church sorted I enlisted the help of my sister who loves to organise and slowly but surely it all came together, with the usual hiccups along the way, but we got there in the end.

We didn’t set a budget but we were careful and we were very lucky to have a group of very talented friends and family.  My sister is a hairdresser and singer so already I was off to a good start but I also enlisted friends to play and sing at the church, reception and even the DJ was a friend. The beautician who was of course a friend also made the cake and last but not least my mum and sister did all the flowers, bouquets and centre pieces. I wish I could say I had some talent to pay them back with but ahem… not so much. I was very lucky.

Our Style: I choose my dress from Tiamo in Limavady. I took my mum and my sister along as they were the experts, they really have an eye for these things so I completely trusted whatever they said. Once we found what suited best, they decided to make some changes to the original dress at the neckline, back and add some sparkle around the waist. To be honest I actually didn’t know what to expect when Adele phoned to say it was ready, I was very nervous going into the shop that day but all thankfully went well and I was delighted with the finished dress. Choosing the bridesmaids was honestly the hardest part. I had my two sisters as bridesmaids, both completely different from each other and we searched for a very long time before we found something to make everyone happy. After doing the high street where nothing seemed to suit we went with Dessy dresses and that way I could choose two different colours for each, deep purple and lilac.

Our Highlights: The whole day went really well from start to finish. The weather was beautiful and this meant people were able to sit outside which was perfect for the barbecue in the evening. The best thing about the whole day is that in two whole summer months of nothing but rain, the 13th August was gorgeous and the sun never stopped shining. We honestly felt like the luckiest people in the world that day.

Beautiful Winter Wedding at Orange Tree House: Wendy + Brian

May 8, 2017
Orange Tree House, Mark Barton Photography | The Promise NI

Hello! How much are we loving this gorgeous weather?! I’m loving it a little too much and ignoring the workload that I have, but today we’re back with Wendy and Brian’s beautiful wedding at Orange Tree House with images from Mark Barton Photography. Following two wedding ceremonies, one at home and one in Hong Kong, Wendy and Brian were relieved their main wedding celebration came together so beautifully, with little fuss, and with the prettiest floral decor from Floral Earth.

Proposal: We got engaged on holiday in Hong Kong. We decided to take a trip to the beautiful Victoria peak to take a few photos. At a place which is usually jam packed with tourists, we managed to find a spot which was completely secluded and empty. Brian was setting up the tripod and camera pretending to take a shot but instead dropped down on one knee, popped the question and I said yes! Shortly after, he reminded me that that day was April 1st, lucky for him it wasn’t an April fools!

Wedding date: Wednesday 9th November 2016

Ceremony & Reception: Orange Tree House, Greyabbey

Our Planning: We are both pretty easy going people and know what we both like. Getting the right venue was the most important thing for us and after viewing a few venues, orange tree house was a clear winner. We didn’t set a budget but planned wisely choosing to spend on the venue and food and save by not having a DJ. Instead we made our own playlist on our iPod and plugged it into the venues sound system. It was great, saved some money and played songs which we actually wanted to hear and dance to! I made our own wedding cake and nibbles and all of the girls did our own makeup on the day.

Our Style: I didn’t know what type of dress I wanted so kept an open mind to all styles. I wasn’t all that excited about my dress on the hanger but after trying it on I didn’t want to take it off. The dress was altered to perfection by Andrea Rachel. My bridesmaids wore pale pink dresses from Phase Eight.

Our Highlights:

Wendy: Finally getting married to each other! It was a long process, we had another two days of wedding ceremonies leading up to our wedding day both at home and in Hong Kong. Our actual wedding day was the perfect way to finish it all off.

Brian: Seeing my beautiful bride walking down the aisle brought a tear to my eye.

A Classic Monochrome Wedding at Manor House by Paula Donnelly Photography: Michelle + Adam

April 24, 2017
Classic monochrome wedding at manor house by Paula Donnelly | The Promise NI

Good morning, it’s back to business today with the kids all positioned nicely behind their school desks and me at mine!

I’m all for a bride who knows what she likes and going for it, which is exactly what Michelle did, just look at those incredible monochrome bridesmaids dresses, very unique. Thanks to Paula Donnelly Photography for sharing the day with us.

Proposal: I had no idea the proposal was going to happen! We were back home at my mum and dads for Christmas and he asked both of them for permission to marry me. So on 17 January 2015 he said we should go to Tatton Park, Cheshire and do something nice for the day. Off we went to Tatton Park, I didn’t notice Adam was being quiet as I was trying to pick my footing as the ground was so mucky around the lake. Then he said lets go to the end of a pier. We got to the end of the pier and he took a little box of out his pocket and the next is a little bit of a blur. I do know that he didn’t actually say the words ‘will you marry me’ as he was so nervous. I think he might have said, ‘is it a yes’. The little box had a Links of London charm that was a mini engagement ring. On the way back to the car, after Adam proposed, he said that he had planned that we were going straight to Chester to look at engagement rings and had booked high tea at a little pace called Mad Hatters to celebrate. He had also arranged for us to fly home in two weeks’ time for an engagement party at home, which my brother-in-law Manus helped him arrange.

Wedding date: Saturday 22nd October 2016

Ceremony: St Macartans Church, Trillick

Reception: Manor House Country Hotel, Killadeas

Our Planning & Wedding Style: Initially we struggled with where we wanted to have the wedding - Ireland, England or abroad. Either way, one of our families would have to travel. We settled on Ireland as Adam wanted to show his family was a good Irish wedding is like! From there we chose Manor House Country Hotel and the rest of the planning was pretty straightforward. I wanted a simple and classic wedding with a timeless feel.

Our Style: I really enjoyed wedding dress shopping, I tried on everything to just get an idea and also some just for fun. I had an idea of what I wanted, lace and sweet heart. As soon a i tried that style on I knew it was not for me. Lace did not flatter me at all. But after trying a few styles I knew the material, neckline etc that suited me. That made it so much easier as I could just walk into a boutique and pull the dresses that best suited me.

I love black and initially wanted the girls in all black but this was a little bit harsh on them. When I saw the black and white that I ending up picking I loved them. They were fun dresses and the girls love them as well.

Our Highlights: Everything ran really smoothly. Paula Donnelly our photograph was the best ever. She was really our wedding organiser on the morning of the wedding. She told us when we needed to be dressed and was keeping an eye on the time for us all. I just though what will be will be, I no longer have control of the day. Everyone we dealt with was so professional and made it their job to make my day perfect. My highlight was getting there and walking up the aisle to Adam. For Adam his highlights were seeing all our friends and family get there, especially his grandparents, and marrying me.

Autumn Woodland Wedding at Dunadry Hotel: Ashely + Andrew

April 20, 2017
Woodland Autumn Wedding, Dunadry Hotel, Jake Samuels Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning! I hope you had the best Easter with your families, the weather wasn’t up to much but I can definitely see milder, and maybe even dryer days on the horizon – hurrah!

Things have been quiet around here over the last week, children and work just do not mix no matter how hard I try – anyone have any magic tips you’d like to share? – but today we’ve the prettiest of autumn weddings to get me back into the work-flow groove and to inspire you. Huge thanks to bride, Ashley for getting in touch and sharing her wedding planning journey.

Couple: Ashley + Andrew Alexander

Ashley and Andrew met on an online dating website and after chatting they exchanged phone numbers and continued to text. “This went on for a few weeks, I suggested meeting for a coffee but Andrew kept putting it off, I now know this was because he is very shy. I was going on a trip to New York over Halloween and when the trip came round, I had text him to say I wouldn’t be able to text him while I was away due to costs. I had planned on cutting it off while I was away as it was a full four weeks on and we still hadn’t met! Then in New York, I got a text from Andrew saying that we would have to meet for coffee when I got back – he clearly missed my chat – we met at a Starbucks a few days after I got home and have been together ever since!”

Proposal: Andrew proposed on holiday in Torrevieja, Spain. We have been holidaying there with my family for quite a few years and love our time out there. In the town there is a pier that goes out about a mile into the sea and is a lovely walk. Andrew suggested that we go there one evening but that we go early in the evening so it was still daylight and could see around us, a lovely idea, except Spain was experiencing a heatwave at the time and it was still 35 degrees when we set out on our walk! When we got to the end of the pier and I lay down on a bench to guzzle a bottle of water, I looked up and Andrew was still standing, I asked was he not going to sit down, he said “I’ve got a question for you…” dropped down onto one knee and said “will you marry me?” Anyone who knows me would say I have always got something to say but in that moment I was speechless, to the point where Andrew had to prompt me to answer the question, through tears I managed to say yes and we took a few moments to let it settle in before calling our families and heading off to celebrate!

Wedding date: Friday 28th October 2016

Ceremony & Reception: The Dunadry Hotel, County Antrim

Our Planning & Wedding Style: After the proposal, we had 5 days left in Spain on holiday and I have never been so eager to get home from a holiday in my life! We started by looking at venues online and narrowing them down from there with a list of requirements. The Dunadry was on our radar as a potential venue already as both Andrew’s parents and Sister had their receptions there. We saw a photo of the hotel gardens in autumn and it really stood out with the colours of the leaves, so from that we decided to plan an Autumn wedding. An Autumnal/Woodland theme quickly emerged and we planned on making a lot of the décor ourselves as Andrew loves to do woodwork in his spare time and is very creative. He made our cake stands from tree trunks, shelves for the sweet table from old pallets and the table plan was actually the wheel from his childhood bicycle sprayed copper and decorated!

Our Style: I had visited around 10 boutiques by the time we got to Chantilly Lace and I had two dresses in mind that I liked but hadn’t got that feeling that any of them were ‘the one’. The assistant, Claire, pointed out the David Tutera dress as it was an unusual colour. As soon as I stepped in and was being buttoned up it felt so light and comfortable and fit like a glove, I called out to my mum “We’ve found it” before I had even seen it on! I couldn’t leave the shop without that dress, we bought the sample and took it home that day, squeezed into the back of a Mini! After choosing my dress in the Tea Rose colour, I felt very limited for colours for the Bridesmaid’s dresses and after much thought ordered the girls dresses in a latte shade and hoped for the best. When the dresses came in all my worries subsided, the colour was warm and beautiful, it was almost as if it was made to go alongside my dress!

Andrew saw his checked Magee Suit in the window of Crawford’s when we were out shopping in the sales after Christmas, he tried it on and loved it but as we hadn’t really thought too much about suits for the men we went for coffee to think about it but were back to purchase the suit within the hour! The Groomsmen’s suits then had to revolve around Andrew’s; we chose a three piece navy suit from Suitor Bros in Belfast. I struggled to find ties I liked so my Dad offered to make them as he is a tailor’s cutter by trade, I picked the fabric and he made the ties and pocket squares to match.

Our Highlights:

Ashley: The day was perfect, I was always concerned about the weather with it being late autumn but we got the most beautiful, bright and mild day. It’s so difficult to pinpoint a moment; I loved the whole day! I really enjoyed the buzz around Mum and Dad’s house on the morning of the wedding and the excitement of getting ready to walk down the aisle to see Andrew and celebrate with all our friends and family!

Andrew: Seeing Ashley coming down the aisle, I had been quite nervous up until then!

Our Advice: Definitely to be organised, especially if planning a wedding that is very DIY focused, we were making things for the wedding a full year in advance and at the time we thought it was ridiculous but are so glad we did in hindsight as the run up to the big day is so busy with meeting vendors and celebrating with friends and family the last thing you want to be doing is arts and crafts! I would also advise couples to invest in a good photographer and videographer as you just can’t take it all in on the day and those will ensure you have lasting memories.

Wedding date: Saturday 27th August 2016

Ceremony: St Davogs, Dromore

Reception: Mill Park Hotel, Donegal

Our Planning & Wedding Style: Once we had booked the venue and mass everything came together pretty quickly! We chose to focus our budget on hiring a fantastic photographer and on my dream wedding dress. I had three bridesmaids who wore soft pink multiway dresses which worked perfectly with the elegant theme of the day and the small rustic touches we added.

Our Style: I got my dress in Mc Elhinney’s Bridal Rooms in Ballybofey. It was from the 2016 Ronald Joyce preview collection. I chose five dresses to try on and left my favourite to the last. I just knew it was my dress even before I had in over my waist! My maids dresses were from Debenhams and the flower girls dresses were picked up from Monsoon.

Our Highlights & Advice: The day went perfectly. The music was my highlight, we were piped into the reception  which was very exciting! I’d advise brides to give themselves plenty of time to plan and to keep records of all payments and dates.

March 27, 2017
Dawn Emma + Ryan, Virginia Park Lodge, Adam and Grace Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning! How lovely was the weekend? We were all very ready for the sun to make an appearance and our winter coats to be forgotten about – it really makes a new week much more appealing, doesn’t it?

Today I’m delighted to share the wedding story of Dawn Emma and Ryan who married surrounded in plum perfection last Spring at Virginia Park Lodge. Thanks to Grace at Adam and Grace Photography for sharing their special day with us.

Proposal: Eight years after meeting in the middle of summer we went to our favourite hotel, Harvey’s Point in Donegal for a few nights. We took a walk at the edge of the lake after dinner and I turned around to see Ryan down on one knee! It was a complete shock, I was not expecting it although we were together for a good few years. We were building a house at the time and we were focused on that so it came as a wonderful surprise. We didn’t rush into wedding plans, we just really enjoyed being engaged and floated on that feeling for a long time. We had our beautiful little girl Anna the following summer and then booked our wedding for the next spring.

Wedding date: Saturday 23rd April 2016

Ceremony: Lurgan Church of Ireland, Virginia, County Cavan

Reception: Virginia Park Lodge, County Cavan

Our Planning & Wedding Style: The most important thing to us was to get the venue right and one we both felt was special. We looked at Harvey’s Point and probably would have chose it had we not found Virginia Park Lodge. A friend happened to mention it to me and we went down to have a look and just fell in love with it. It had an old world charm about it, but was going through a major renovation. It was an unfinished product when we viewed it but could see its potential. It was such an amazing venue to get married in. It was definitely at the top end of our budget, but we both agreed to have a fabulous venue and save elsewhere. Just after we booked it, my mother told me it was where my grandparents had their wedding reception! So it was nice to have that special meaning too. Deirdre the events organiser was superb, direct, but knew exactly what we wanted and worked with our budget. We saved on other areas like no drinks reception, we just had tea/coffee, and we had no drinks for the toast, just wine. I don’t think anyone missed this and I certainly don’t miss it when I’m at a wedding.

Our Style: I always wanted a wedding dress with sleeves and I came across a Ronald Joyce dress in Mc Elhinneys. A heavy, but tight fitting dress with champagne lace. My bridesmaid had Linzi Jay dresses from Ladies Day in Monaghan. Elaine Sheridan is a dressmaker who owns the shop, and she is very talented in making dresses and jewellery. She added the draped pearls and diamonds to the back of the bridesmaid dresses and also made the bespoke earrings and bracelets, as well as my little girls flower girl dress. Because the dresses were plum, we followed this through to the men’s suits, with dickie-bows and ties. The plum colour ran into my flowers which I knew I wanted to be vintage and wild looking and the florist did an amazing job at capturing this. The flowers became a really important look especially in the photographs.

Our Highlights: It’s very hard to capture one highlight of the day…. I think Ryan and I were amazed at how relaxed we both were and really enjoyed the day. It was a magical day from beginning to end. Actually as the band started, Ryan put our little Anna on his shoulders and was dancing away, she was loving it, that was a special moment.

Our Advice: My one piece of advice to anyone getting married is try to stay calm and relax. Stressing about things will zap your energy and potentially decrease how you will enjoy your day. People said to me it will fall into place, and it really does!
