Untamed Romance: Contemporary & Vibrant Inspiration

March 30, 2016
Contemporary Styled Bridal Shoot I Photography by Marc Lawson I The Promise NI

Good morning, did you have a fabulous Easter break? I hope so!

Today I am beyond thrilled to share the results of our very special bridal inspiration shoot that we shot in March. For the first official shoot for the blog, I was nervous, but with the most mega team behind me, well I had no reason to be! Early morning with snow on the ground, Lynne and I left Tyrone and headed for the coast. Thankfully, we left the snow behind us, somewhere around Moneymore and headed North to Portrush where we were using the incredible sea view restaurant space/building site attached to KoKo Cafe on Castle Erin Street in Portrush – nearby coffee, we’re smart ladies.

Wanting to reflect the colourful persona of the blog the inspiration was always going to be modern romance with vibrant shades, and with Stacey Kilpatrick on makeup duty, Jil from The Stables Flower Co. on flowers and Marc Lawson capturing every detail, well we’ll let the images speak for themselves….

Wedding Cake Trends for 2016

January 13, 2016
Wedding cake trends 2016, Truly Scrumptious Cakes By Design

It’s icy cold, and we’ve sure had enough of all these storms so today we’re going for some cake love to cheer us up! A few weeks before Christmas I caught up with Emma, cake baker and designer extraordinaire of Truly Scrumptious Cakes By Design in Omagh for a mooch into what we can look forward to for wedding cakes this year. Let me tell you, it’s going to be exciting and tasty! Over to you Emma…

Wedding cake trends 2016, Truly Scrumptious Cakes By Design

Naked Cakes

The naked cake has been around for a couple of years and with good reason 2016 will see more of them. Semi-naked cakes dressed with fruit or fresh flowers will also be a hugely popular choice, particularly for summer weddings.

Texture

Lots of brides are choosing to reflect the detailing on their wedding gowns by using texture throughout their cake designs. From ruffles and pleats, to rosettes and frills, texture is a gorgeously feminine trend that I adore making. With multiple tiered cakes texture works really when different finishes are used to each tier, so maybe a ruffled tier placed below a plainly iced tier and finishing with a metallic tier on the top.

Metallics

Who doesn’t love metallics at weddings?! All kinds of shades are possible with a metallic finish, from tones of gold to champagne as well as silvers and metallic shines to other shades such as vibrant greens and rich amethyst which give a luxurious lustre and feel.

Cake & Dessert Tables

This year I predict we will see more and more tables laden with delicious cakes, cupcakes, cake balls and macaroons, why not, they are utterly stunning to look at!

Traditional

Florals and lace detail will remain very popular, though with a more elegant modern twist, moving away a little from the full on vintage look.

His & Hers

All in one bride and grooms cakes which could include an element for the groom, with either a hidden themed side or just a wee node to the grooms hobbies. These cakes are always fun to make.

In terms of colours I am seeing lots of soft gold, blush pinks and peachy tones for spring and summer 2016 weddings.

Alone By The Sea

Etheral coastal inspiration shoot by Lisa McConalogue

‘We two were alone by the sea;

I and the man I loved with me.

Our eyes were glad and our hearts beat high,

As we sat by the sea, my love and I ‘

Today we’re sharing a stunning bridal inspiration shoot by Lisa Mc Conalogue Photography. Drawing inspiration from ‘The Ship from Tír Na nÓg’ by Emily Henrietta Hickey, Lisa and her incredible team created this beauty of a shoot. Over to Lisa to explain how they came up with the idea…

“It all started with local designer Megan from Couture Bridal Accessories approaching me to collaborate on an exciting venture to create an ethereal, coastal shoot inspired by the magical and romantic poem written by Emily Henrietta Hickey.  Megan wanted to convey the love of a man and a woman and the adventures they shared at the shoreline, their deep love alive and breathing in the waves of the ocean.”

Tír Na nÓg or ‘The Land of The Young’ is an ancient, Irish mythical tale of a supernatural realm of everlasting youth. A land of beauty and joy which mythical heroes visited by entering ancient caves or by going under the sea.

“We loved the idea of a coastal shoot showcasing the beautiful scenic country we live in.  The Isle of Doagh is  known for its breathtaking scenery, nestled on the coast of Donegal along the most Northern coastline of Ireland, providing the most idyllic location to recreate and bring to life the magic and romance of this mythical love poem. Set against a backdrop of green mountains, which sweep down to meet the Atlantic Ocean, encapsulated by the rustic, rocky terrain and soft golden sands.”

“We love the relaxed bohemian hairstyles and natural flawless makeup, which we felt, would be perfect for this type of shoot and would work harmoniously with Megan’s Juliet cap veils. Our model Dearbhla has been in the limelight recently as she has been crowned Northern Ireland’s, Miss Earth so we knew she would be perfect for the shoot.”

“The florals, simple and rustic by the incredibly talented Peter Whiteman mimic the rural landscaping. We wanted to keep the palette neutral and earthy, using Kate Wilton’s hand dyed silk ribbon in grey but with a touch of feminine blush to dress the bouquet and compliment the colours of the pebbles and stones on the beach.   The stationery by de Winton Paper Co highlights the mystical colours of the sea with the hand painted blue, delicate florals and romantic calligraphy.  Megan also stumbled across an old photograph of her grandfather as a sailor and we decided to incorporate this to create the image of the “man I loved”.”

Summer floral inspiration shoot by You Them Us Photography

How’s your Tuesday going? I know I sound like a broken record, but what a crazy talented bunch of wedding suppliers we have in this little country – honestly, brides you are a very lucky lot!

Today’s inspiration shoot was brought together by You Them Us Photography and a host of clever creatives, including Tippy Logronio MUA, The White Letter, The Rosehip and Berry Studio, Life Is Sweet and Lynette Murray Hair, with gorgeous gowns from Petticoat Lane Bridal. Shot at Orange Tree House, one of our prettiest and quaint wedding venues, it sure is bursting with floral inspiration and lots of beautiful touches.

Using bold summer florals for inspiration the team created a gorgeous scene with bright flowers combined with vintage accessories and stunning bridal gowns. The makeup reflects the colours used throughout the flowers with Tippy using a muted, neutral eye colour teamed with a bolder focus on the lips. Floral invites and a stunning cake were styled with incredible florals and a flower curtain backdrop added to the romantic nature of the day.

Five Minutes With… Truly Scrumptious Cakes By Design

October 30, 2015
Truly Scrumptious Cakes By Design

Good morning lovelies, and welcome to the weekend. Last week I had the chance to catch up with Emma from Truly Scrumptious Cakes By Design at the superb McElhinney’s Bridal Rooms relaunch event (more on that later). Emma’s magical hanging cake was a show-stopper and it was fab to hear all about her creative ideas, you can check it out on her Instagram. She had five minutes to spare so of course, out came the questions!

1. Pinterest or Instagram?

Instagram.

2. Belfast or Dublin?

Belfast – I’ve never been to Dublin so I can’t really compare.

3. Home or away?

Home – I’ve two homes…here in Omagh is my home where I live, but my ‘home’ is Maidstone in Kent. I do love to get away though too, as it’s the only time I truly switch off from work.

4. Biggest achievement?

Definitely becoming a successful cake designer. It’s a far cry from my degree as a Sports Therapist, though I suppose it’s still very much hands-on work. The best bit is seeing the photos of couples cutting their cakes and feeling so privileged to be a part of their special day.

5. Scared of?

Failure.

6 Couldn’t live without?

My family and my iPhone.

7. Would rather not…

Have to do washing up! There’s a lot of it when is comes to cakes.

8. Five dream dinner party guests?

Holly Willoughby, Jamie Oliver, Dara O’Briain, my best friend Natasha and my Nanna.

9. What would you cook them?

I’d get Jamie to “Bish, Bash, Bosh” a lovely supper while I made a cake obviously.

10. What’s the very first thing you do when you wake up?

Check my iPhone.

11. Last book you read?

Nikon D60 – Digital Field Guide. I’m more of a magazine girl rather than books and it’s usually about weddings or cakes.

12. Favourite TV programme/series?

Casualty, I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember.

13. Guilty pleasure?

Salt & Vinegar crisps.

14. Favourite song?

At the minute I’m liking… James Lawson “Wasn’t Expecting That” and Justin Beiber “What Do You Mean.”

15. Old or new?

I like a bit of both. I always find it a struggle to throw old things away but I definitely love buying new things.

16. Bold or pastel?

Pastels most of the time.

17. Wedding dress or wedding shoes?

Wedding dress all the way. There are so many gorgeous dresses these days I wouldn’t know where to start. I’d love to see if mine would still fit me nearly 10yrs on.

18. Finds inspiration from?

Wedding magazines, Pinterest, my kids & life in general.

19. Ceremony or reception?

Both. The ceremony is so intimate and such a special moment; but the reception is the time to celebrate…love, life & laughter!

20. Random thought?

Life isn’t about the number of breaths you take but about the moments that take your breath away.

You can view Emma’s stunning work at www.truly-scrumptious-cakes.net.

Local Loves: Jupiter Red

October 27, 2015
Jupiter Red

Good morning lovely people! And you really are very, very lovely, thank you so much for the kind words and comments about our wedding.

Today, we’ve a pretty special lady to share, Janet McNamee is the wonderful person behind Jupiter Red a textile print studio specialising in hand printed linen textiles. One of our Local Loves we’re excited to share her products, which are perfect for a wedding gift or a very fancy favour for your guests. I had a chat with Janet and learnt about the design and making process. The designs are gorgeous and a true taste of Irish crafts at their best.

Jupiter Red Jupiter Red

“Jupiter Red offers couples an alternative to the formal boxed gift set of stiff damask linen with shamrock pattern and emerald green ribbon. We like to think of our customers using their napkins for lazy lunches with friends or a nice cosy date night. Our durable tea towels will last forever and are a useful and thoughtful gift for occasions such as a wedding. It’s not expensive show-off linen, it’s just lovely everyday 100% Northern Irish soft, unbleached linen.  The patterns are original and are handprinted in my little studio which I set up three years ago.”

Jupiter Red

“I worked in the Irish Linen Centre and the Ulster Folk Museum and studied Fine Art at University of Ulster. I worked for IKEA as an Interior Designer before setting up my studio. The current products include tea towels, napkins, tote bags, aprons, and lavender sachets. I recently added personalised wedding and anniversary tea towels to the product range, and I am chuffed that they have proved really popular – I love knowing that I have played a small part in someone’s special day. They make a great unique gift for a special couple, or as a wedding favour for smaller weddings.”

Jupiter Red

“Patterns usually start off as sketches or photographs and then the design is transferred onto a silkscreen. The silkscreen is like a big stencil. It is placed on top of the linen and inks are then pushed through it onto the linen fabric below, using a squeegee. The linen is then dried, heat set and sewn into lovely gifts.”

Jupiter Red

“I know nowadays we are all striving to be more eco friendly and use less plastic and paper products.  Buying a durable linen product is a good place to start. But think about it even further… a lovely little re-usable linen tote is more eco-friendly than a bright orange plastic carrier bag, but it also looks far prettier.  And a gorgeous set of re-usable linen napkins is sounder than paper napkins, and they will also make your surprise mid-week date night meal feel really special. They’re just simple changes, small gestures, little treats, but they make you feel so good.  And, you can feel eco-smug too, for using sustainable fabrics and supporting a local designer/maker!”

You can purchase Janet’s designs from her online shop at www.jupiterred.co.uk, with custom orders welcome. And if you’re in the need for some cool rustic Christmas decorations, check out the stag range too!
