Couple: Zoe + Marty Young

“We first met 12 years ago on a night out. Marty was friends with my sister and she introduced us. As we were both shy, it wasn’t until six months later that we had our first date. We went to the cinema and bonded over our mutual love of movies. For our wedding, we decided that our table names would be the names and quotes from our favourite movies as a nod to our first date.”

The Proposal

“We went on holidays to Ios, Greece in July 2015. We were on the balcony of our hotel at sunset when Marty got down on one knee. I, of course, said yes.”

Wedding date: Friday 21st April 2017

Ceremony: Church of the Sacred Heart, Cloughoge, Newry

Reception: Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Meath

Our Planning

“We’re both quite laid-back people so wanted to make sure we gave ourselves plenty of time to plan our dream day. We had over a year and a half to plan so we organised each element of the day bit by bit. We had visited Johnstown Estate for my 30th birthday and loved the amazing food, picturesque surroundings and friendly staff so we knew it was the ideal venue for our wedding reception. After we had booked our date for the venue and church, we booked the photographers, videographer and band. Everything else just flowed from there. We set a rough budget but made sure that we had all the things that we really wanted. We worked out how much each element would cost and then saved up for it.

As Marty is a chef and I’m a food-a-holic, the food was extremely important to us! We were delighted that what we spent on the venue, it really paid off as the food and the venue were both stunning. We also wanted to make sure we had a photographer and videographer that captured the vibe of our day and gave us beautiful memories to look back on. The wedding day goes by in a flash so we were thrilled when we got our photos and video as they captured so many great moments throughout the day.”

Our Style

“We didn’t have a specific theme for the wedding day, we just wanted the day to be relaxed and fun. The burgundy of Marty’s suit contrasted beautifully with the lavender of the bridesmaids’ dresses and this helped me decide on a colour palette for the wedding flowers. Other than that, we just chose the things that we liked best and everything came together really well!

Marty had initially wanted a navy suit but changed his mind when he set his sights on a burgundy Herbie Frogg 3-piece suit in Bogart Menswear in Newry. Neil in Bogart was amazing with all the suggestions he made and the boys all looked very dapper in their suits.”

My Dress

“I had a tricky time getting a wedding dress due to my very curvy body type. I loved beading and heavy embellishment but unfortunately when I tried on these types of dresses, they just didn’t suit me. Twelve shops later and I was beginning to get worried! I found my dress at a Ronald Joyce trunk show in Creative Ideas in Armagh. I loved the lace and low back on the dress and felt amazing when I put it on.”

Our Highlights

“The highlight for both of us was getting married in front of all our family and friends. We had such an amazing day and were so happy that the people we love could share it with us!”

Our Advice

“Things don’t always go to plan with weddings, it’s important to enjoy the run up and tackle any problems with a cool head. The day flies by so quickly so don’t worry about anything that goes wrong, just enjoy the craic with your family and friends! We had a near disaster with the cake! When we arrived at the reception, Tamara, the wedding coordinator told us that our cake baker had not arrived with the cake. When Tamara had phoned her, the baker said she had thought the wedding was the next day! We decided not to panic as not having a cake was a small glitch in an otherwise perfect day. When the cake arrived round 10pm and wasn’t decorated in the style I had requested, my sister and Tamara used some flowers to decorate the cake and most of the guests were none the wiser!”
