It’s so easy to fall in love with autumn, and it makes a great season to get married in. As much as we adore the feeling of freedom summer brings, by nature (I think it’s an NI thing), we’re now ready to baton down the hatches, revert to a slower pace and get cosy before the long, dark nights of winter make an appearance.
Our couple today, Roisin and Diarmuid chose the golden month of October last year to say I do. This morning we’re delighted to be sharing their beautiful day at Slieve Donard Resort & Spa. Photography is by the delightful cousin of the bride, Sheena Thompson Photography, thanks for sharing this stunning day with us!
Couple: Roisin + Diarmuid Furey
“We met properly when we played at a tag rugby tournament in Limerick on the same team. We were playing for a team organised by the gym we both went to so had met a couple of times before pre and post gym classes before that!”
“We got engaged on a weekend away in Kerry. We cycled around the Dingle Peninsula for the day it was beautiful. We had lunch on a beach there and I was told after that was Plan A for the proposal, but he had second thoughts after seeing there were more people there than expected. Diarmuid had told me we were staying at his aunt’s B&B in Killarney for the night, so I was so surprised when we arrived at a lovely hotel instead. He had recorded a wee video on his phone to do the talking for him. It was a total surprise for me and I loved it!”
Wedding date: Friday 26th October 2018
Ceremony: St Mary’s Church, Glasdrumman
Reception: Slieve Donard Resort & Spa, Newcastle
“My top priority was to try and make everything as simple an easy as possible, but still making sure everyone was going to have a great day out and enjoy themselves. I like small subtle details rather than anything over the top and I wanted the day to feel personal to us.
I live and work in Dublin so I found it difficult to organise appointments with suppliers located closer to the wedding venue as most often these had to be during my working week, I don’t know how people get married abroad!”
Our Budget & Suppliers
“We had a budget, I’m an accountant so there were a lot of excel spreadsheets and I loved this bit of the planning!
I organised a lot of the decorations for the ceremony and venue myself either making them myself or buying bits and pieces I liked. I made the table plan and centrepieces all based around different places myself and Diarmuid had visited in Ireland with a Polaroid of us there. There were also some gold pumpkins and a trick or treat sweet bar given it was Halloween weekend. Instead of a proper wedding cake we had a dessert table with different cakes and handmade marshmallows.
My cousin Sheena was our photographer so she knew me really well and made it totally comfortable and relaxed. My friend designed the wedding invitations for us. We got married right beside my home in my chapel with our local choir singing for the service. We tried as much as possible not to get tied up in the hype and all the extras that can come with a wedding.”
“My wedding dress was by Milla Nova from Runaway Bride in Wexford Town. I really enjoyed the dress shopping, more-so because it was a nice day out with my mum, sisters and best friend. I went to four shops and found my dress, I didn’t have a very specific idea of what I was looking for, nor did I have an overwhelming feeling when I saw the dress I picked but the longer I thought about it, I knew it was the one for me.
I had the bridesmaids dresses made by a local dressmaker Ellen. Having them made meant I was able to pick the colour, material and style we wanted. Each dress was fitted to the bridesmaid so they were able to tweak to the shape that suited them best and I think they were so flattering on the girls, they looked amazing.”
“Keep a checklist and try and tick things off one step at a time to not get overwhelmed. Keep a budget, I think otherwise it would be so easy to get carried away!”
