Romantic Outdoor Summer’s Day at Larchfield Estate

Happy Halloween!

It has been far too long since we’ve shared a beautiful Northern Ireland wedding but today we are putting that right with Ashlea and Timmy’s stunning summer wedding.

Life with four kids has been, for want of a better word, manic and blogging has fallen further down the priority list – until now, we have a bag full of amazing weddings (amongst other things) to share over the next few months, so bring on winter! We’ve got plenty of beauties to make it colourful and exciting! I hope you’ll stick with us on this journey, and please do get in touch if you have a wedding to share, or simply want to chat! Much love, Em x

Couple: Ashlea + Timmy Hall

“We first met at his cousins wedding who I played hockey with. After countless plane journeys and long distance phone calls to Glasgow where Timmy worked and lived for the first 2 years of our relationship we both knew it was for life.”

The Proposal

“Timmy proposed in June 2017 after two years of living in London together for work. I was told on a Monday that on the Saturday we were going into the centre of London for the day and that I needed to pack something nice to wear as we were staying over. He had the whole day planned out (even went to the bother of writing out a timetable in his notes app on his phone). We spent the morning walking around some of our favourite spots and had a lovely lunch in Covent Garden. After this we went back to the hotel to freshen up. We then travelled down the River Thames on one of the boats after which he took me to my favourite bridge overlooking Big Ben and the London Eye where he got down on one knee (after talking the biggest load of rubbish obviously due to nerves). Me being me got so embarrassed I told him to get up! Our day was finished off with champagne in one of the tallest building in London followed by dinner in City Social which overlooks London at night.”

Wedding date: Saturday 14th July 2018

Venue: Larchfield Estate, Lisburn

Our Planning

“When it came to looking for a venue we always wanted somewhere that would allow us to have informal day that would be fun for our guests as we tend not to take ourselves too seriously. Larchfield was the first venue we went to view and as soon as we drove through the front gates we just felt it was right. We cancelled the rest of our viewings and put our name down for the only date they had left in July. Everything else just kind of fell into place.”

Our Style

“Colour schemes were soft pink and pastel green which was decided to fit around the venue and also our bridesmaids dresses. Our theme was laid back and romantic. I love fairy lights which is ideal at Larchfield Estate. We also wanted our friends and family to enjoy their day by not being too formal so we decided on summery things like a BBQ and outdoor garden games and even had the speeches outside before dinner also which worked a treat.”

My Dress

“Mum and I started the search in London before I moved back home again. However it didn’t get too far. We went into one shop and it was basically like ‘Say Yes To The Dress’ with bells being rung when someone picked their dress and all future brides trying on dresses in the same huge dressing room, including all their entourage watching on – so embarrassing!! When I moved back to Northern Ireland my search continued without much success. I had saw a dress in a shop that I was going to settle for before my very last appointment at Petticoat Lane Bridal Boutique. The girls were amazing and I can’t recommend them highly enough! It was the very last dress that I ever tried on. When the bridal consultant described it to me I turned my nose up and said I didn’t like the sound of it. It looked like nothing on the hanger but I decided to try it anyway as I had nothing to lose and instantly fell in love! My mum and chief bridesmaid’s faces said it all when I came out of the fitting room.”

Our Highlights

“The day went by like a dream but too quick!! Honestly one of the best days of our lives and we are constantly saying how we want to do it over again. We had the most beautiful weather in July also and were very lucky to get one of the hottest days of the summer. Our highlight was being able to share our day with our friends and family and to see what we had been planning for months come together which can be hard to visualise at times. I loved getting ready with my girls on the morning of the wedding also and spending time with them with some Prosecco and good laughs.”

Don’t get hung up on what other people will think, remember it’s YOUR day!”

True Romance: Boho Inspiration Bridal Shoot by Caroline Smyth Photography

July 23, 2018

Boho inspiration shoot, Caroline Smyth Photography, Kilmore Country House | The Promise NI

I am a real lover of travel and simply adore holidays (if you didn’t see my Instagram recently you’ll be lost, go check out the highlights!), but after an enjoyable break from reality I always love coming home and getting back to routine, my own bed and, surprisingly to work!

Today we are getting our high-summer content started with a beautiful inspiration bridal shoot by Larne based wedding photographer, Caroline Smyth. With a carefree and bohemian look the shoot was held at Kilmore Country House. Thanks to Caroline and her brilliant wedding suppliers for sharing with us!

Boho, carefree and elegant are just a few of the words to describe my recent shoot at the always stunning Kilmore Country House.

Since receiving the Mrs2Be Bride’s Choice Award for Best Wedding Photographer in Ireland for the second consecutive year, I decided to celebrate in the best way possible; by joining forces with some of Northern Ireland’s most talented wedding suppliers to showcase a little of what this amazing industry has to offer.

As a photographer, I’ve always been drawn to wedding venues which break the norm. I’m lucky to have worked with a wealth of couples over the years who are keen to sway from tradition by choosing a venue which lends itself better to their personal style. And so, inspiring Kilmore Country House and its unrivalled grounds seemed like the perfect fit.

The theme for the shoot was true romance, drawing on the beauty of a bygone era, but with a modern-day twist! The rolling hills and fields served as a beautiful backdrop, while floral archways, delicate draping and an abundance of romantic candles truly set the scene.

The woods added an ethereal feel and served as the best location for some really romantic photos, especially with the soothing sounds of the harp filling the air. Sometimes capturing a quiet moment between two people in love needs just the simplest of scenes in order to allow the occasion to speak for itself.

A vintage Ford convertible Mustang rolled up and added vintage vibes to the day. The couple really looked at ease in it and the opportunity to photograph it definitely added a fun element to the shoot.

In recent years, it’s become more apparent that couples are keen to introduce a little more of their personal style into their wedding day. Thankfully, this is easily achieved through a variety of accessories, which lend themselves perfectly to any style of wedding. Throughout the shoot, we showcased an array of additions such as signage, chinaware and stationery, which definitely enhanced the style of the shoot. Wedding day classics, such as a cake and fabulous floral arrangements also took centre stage, offering a range of ideas for your wedding day.

Thanks to all the suppliers who helped make this an unforgettable day.

Relaxed Countryside Garden Party Wedding: Sarah + Peter

April 3, 2018

What a glorious wedding we have to kick off the new look website with – oh, didn’t you notice? We’ve had a little restyle! I would suggest you go have a look around but not before you read about Sarah and Peters beautiful countryside garden party wedding that was held in her aunts garden and orchard! Thanks to Adam and Grace for their stunning photography.

Couple: Sarah + Peter Wilson

“We met back in 2007 whilst we were both still at school. Although we weren’t at the same school we used to go to the same Spar shop on our lunch break and through meeting there, mutual friends and the power of MSN we became friends. We knew it was for life during our first holiday together. We’d been going out for two years and booked a trip travelling round Australia for seven weeks. Everyone said we were a bit bonkers but it was the best seven weeks. We quickly realised we didn’t want the adventures to ever stop happening.”

The Proposal

“We always used to walk in the Roe Valley Country Park and it was here that Peter asked me to be his official girlfriend on 06.06.09. We were up here walking our dog Puddles on 06.06.16 and after coming back to Peter and Puddles from a bin run with dog poo (glamorous!) I noticed Puddles had a t-shirt on and then Peter got down on one knee.”

Wedding date: Friday 2nd June 2017

Ceremony: Carrick Parish Church, Limavady

Reception: Stretch marquee in family’s garden, Terrydoo Road, Limavady

Our Planning

“I love Pinterest and loved it even more during wedding planning. We found the whole planning thing relatively easy, we both knew what we didn’t want – fussy hotel wedding, overly fancy food and anything over the top. We spent about ten months planning our wedding.

We wanted a laid back day where our family and friends and us could totally relax and have the best day ever. Since I was little, I always had joked if I was ever to get married I’d want to do it in my aunt and uncles garden in a tipi tent so after Peter proposed, my aunty and uncle offered to host our wedding in their garden in stretch tents. I jumped at the chance then convinced Peter that I could make it a reality!

We put a lot of personality into our day, I’m quite creative so loved making and creating things for our day. I made our order of services, tables settings, table decor etc and my aunty done all of the flowers. We booked things quite quickly without too much hassle. Most of the big things like photographer, food, entertainment etc we booked quite well in advance.

We didn’t divide our budget up but we knew our maximum spend. Last year our real goal was to buy a house so a lot of money went into that instead. We were lucky that we weren’t out the huge cost of hiring a venue and found that by booking and sourcing things we were able to really cut down our costs a lot.”

Our Style

“We didn’t really decide on a specific theme, we knew we wanted something laid back with a countryside feel. I love bunting and hessian so kind of set our theme round this. I had the whole family collecting empty jars which I spent lots of weekends decorating for our venue.

I have lots of boy cousins and only two girls so I’d decided to have the two girls as bridesmaid and flower girl. Unfortunately my littlest cousin lives in Australia and they weren’t able to come home so I just had one bridesmaid. It was really easy finding a dress for Molly, although she’s only 13 she’s tall so we didn’t want anything that would be too old. I was browsing on Debenhams one night and noticed a simple gold dress with a drape at the back, I ordered it and when it arrived Molly liked it and so did I so it was as easy as that.

Peter went to Tomorrow’s in Londonderry to pick his suits, one of our groomsmen were in Australia and one was in London so they couldn’t all be there for sizing or picking. Peter opted for navy and grey and contrasted his waistcoat colour with the groomsmen.

Our little page boy Jacob wore an outfit from Next and Converse shoes. During the reception he got hold of the microphone and sang Wheels on the Bus to the whole marquee!”

My Dress

“I went to Ultimate Dresses, Dungiven, Co. Londonderry who were great, really relaxed environment and not pushy at all.

I originally went to try on a plain, straight Justin Alexander dress but when I tried this style on I quickly realised they didn’t suit me. My mum then pulled out a beaded Jasmine Couture dress which was similar to ones I’d seen by Anna Campbell on Pinterest so tried it on. I literally fell in love the minute I tried it on, it’s definitely true that you’ll know when you try on the right one!”

Our Highlights

“We honestly had the best day of our lives. Friends and family still talk about how good a day they had and we loved every minute of it. We did have a funny moment in the morning when the camper van got lost going to collect the boys for the church. Peters parents had to climb into their own car and drive round and round until they found the camper van with the ribbons on it and lead it to the right house. Peter and I also got forgotten about at the church. After getting some photos taken we discovered our groomsmen had got our driver to take them down to the local pub for a few before the reception so we were left in the rain for a while before people realised we were missing from the reception!

Our highlight of the day were the speeches and being surrounded by our family and friends, seeing them all happy and enjoying themselves in the marquee.”

Our Advice

“The advice we’d give to other couples would be to totally do your own thing. Decide exactly what you want and don’t be bogged down by other people. When we shared our ideas with people we got a lot of funny looks and remarks of ‘that’s a bit different’ but you do need to do what makes you happy. Also enjoy the lead up to the day, the week before our wedding was mad busy as we were decorating the stretch tents and setting up tables/chairs etc but between all my family we threw ourselves in and the week was the best craic. I was a lot more relaxed than I thought I would be, so much so I was getting pushed round the house in a wheelbarrow the day before the wedding. It meant neither of us were nervous or anxious the day of the wedding, we really enjoyed it from start to finish.”

Pub-Vibe Tipi Wedding at Hilden Brewery by Marc Lawson: Jolene + Alain

Hilden Brewery Wedding with Tipis, Marc Lawson Photography | The Promise NI

Good morning!

I hope your week is going well so far, Wednesday already and today we’ve bags of alternative wedding inspiration to share – and tipis I can’t tell you how excited I am to have a tipi wedding on the blog finally! Jolene and Alain are my kind of couple; tea drinkers, lovers of a good pint and always up for craic! Thanks to Marc Lawson Photography in Belfast for sharing their Big Day at Hilden Brewery.

“We met in McHugh’s Belfast, it wasn’t quite the dance moves that attracted me initially. I knew he was a keeper when he first made me a cup of tea – that is something very hard to get right and if you can find someone who can actually do it to your standard then my advice to anyone is to hold on tight and never let them go!”

Wedding date: Thursday 13th August 2015

Ceremony: St. Mary’s Craigavole, Swatragh

Reception: Hilden Brewery, Lisburn

Our Planning: We both wanted a very relaxed vibe to the wedding so we knew straight away we wanted Hilden Brewery. We had been up at the festival a few months before and knew it would be perfect fit, something a bit different. It was never going to be the big white wedding, more pub-like, with a lovely outdoor setting including tipi tents. Beer on tap on arrival, a lovely meal and a barbecue in the evening was just what we wanted. Once we had the venue and the church sorted I enlisted the help of my sister who loves to organise and slowly but surely it all came together, with the usual hiccups along the way, but we got there in the end.

We didn’t set a budget but we were careful and we were very lucky to have a group of very talented friends and family.  My sister is a hairdresser and singer so already I was off to a good start but I also enlisted friends to play and sing at the church, reception and even the DJ was a friend. The beautician who was of course a friend also made the cake and last but not least my mum and sister did all the flowers, bouquets and centre pieces. I wish I could say I had some talent to pay them back with but ahem… not so much. I was very lucky.

Our Style: I choose my dress from Tiamo in Limavady. I took my mum and my sister along as they were the experts, they really have an eye for these things so I completely trusted whatever they said. Once we found what suited best, they decided to make some changes to the original dress at the neckline, back and add some sparkle around the waist. To be honest I actually didn’t know what to expect when Adele phoned to say it was ready, I was very nervous going into the shop that day but all thankfully went well and I was delighted with the finished dress. Choosing the bridesmaids was honestly the hardest part. I had my two sisters as bridesmaids, both completely different from each other and we searched for a very long time before we found something to make everyone happy. After doing the high street where nothing seemed to suit we went with Dessy dresses and that way I could choose two different colours for each, deep purple and lilac.

Our Highlights: The whole day went really well from start to finish. The weather was beautiful and this meant people were able to sit outside which was perfect for the barbecue in the evening. The best thing about the whole day is that in two whole summer months of nothing but rain, the 13th August was gorgeous and the sun never stopped shining. We honestly felt like the luckiest people in the world that day.

A Relaxed and Atmospheric DIY Wedding at Clandeboye Courtyard by Laura J Curran Photography: Claire + Robbie

We were all about the ‘hygge’ this past weekend. The weather has suddenly taken a chilly dip and low and behold here we are in the last full week of November, awaiting the craziness of December and Christmas. Relaxing and enjoying each others company is where I think the last few weeks of the the year always lie, and from doing jigsaws to eating bacon butties in our PJs and watching Planet Earth, at The Promise HQ we intend to make the most of it when we can.

Today’s couple, Clare and Robbie were keen to give their guests a relaxing and laid back wedding day with the focus on great food, drink and music to help them let their hair down. Their day was full of personal details with much input and creativity from the couple and their families. We love the rustic, relaxed nature of their celebration captured perfectly by Laura J Curran Photography.

“We met 11 years ago in The Limelight in Belfast….Robbie spilled a pint on me and the rest is history!” began Clare.

After working on a long distance relationship when they were at University (Newcastle and Edinburgh) they both knew it was for keeps and Robbie planned the perfect proposal during a weekend in Dublin.

“We headed to a little Italian Restaurant in Temple Bar for dinner and drinks and after some limoncello and plenty of wine I managed to get up the courage to ask her to be my wife! I knew that Clare doesn’t like public displays of affection so I had arranged for the hotel to put a bottle of champagne and flowers in our suite….unfortunately Clare was a little tiddly and waltzed straight past everything and fell into a heap on the sofa. I took my chance and through the odd tear she finally said yes! It was the perfect way for it to have happened because it reflected our sense of humour and laid back attitude,” explained Robbie.

“We wanted to have a relatively short engagement so got planning pretty quickly. One of the most important tasks we tackled first was finding a photographer to capture the day. We hit the jackpot when we were introduced to Laura. She knew exactly what we were after – her laid back attitude put everyone at ease and she couldn’t have documented the day any better. We can’t stop looking at our photos!! The rest of it just fell into place. The most important thing for us was to keep it simple and relaxed. A laid back day with good food and drink with our favourite people was our ultimate goal,” explained Clare.

“The whole day was a real DIY affair, as we wanted to do as much ourselves as possible, ranging from invitations, table numbers and favours to our outdoor seating area made from hessian covered hay bales and pallets. We loved that our choice of venue allowed us to incorporate our own touches.

We were lucky that Robbie’s mum has a floral business and a garden bustling full of flowers. As soon as we had set a date we began planning and growing a range of soft coloured blooms; we wanted informal and unstructured flowers with lots of greenery and foliage popping up everywhere to compliment the venue. Just wow!!!!

Seeing all our personal handiwork come together with a huge help from family made the whole day more personal,” added Clare.

Clare’s Advice:

Have a clear view of what you want and make sure it reflects you as a couple. Try not to follow trends and don’t let others influence you – trust your instincts and enjoy it as it really does go by so quickly.
